Three Backlinks. Domain Score of 1.
Cited by AI Anyway.
How a Costa Mesa kitchen remodeling campaign earned top Google positions and got mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers — starting from almost no domain authority at all.
A crowded market. No authority to spend.
The site competes for commercial searches around full kitchen remodels, remodeling costs, and contractor selection in Costa Mesa — one of the most contested remodeling markets in Orange County. Home Depot, Yelp, Thumbtack, Angi and a dozen established local firms already own that real estate.
The positioning needed care, too. The business connects homeowners with vetted, independent contractors. It is not a remodeling contractor itself, and it is not a marketplace that blasts each lead out to a long list of companies. Earlier messaging blurred that line — which risks confusing prospective customers and AI systems alike.
- Clear commercial intent to target
- A defined, high-value local market
- A service model worth explaining precisely
- But almost no domain strength to lean on
- ✕ Domain Score of 1 — effectively a brand-new site in Google’s eyes
- ✕ Only 3 backlinks from 3 referring domains
- ✕ Competing against national directories with Domain Scores of 56–71
- ✕ Brand not appearing in AI answers for its core commercial queries
- ✕ Messaging that read like a contractor rather than a matching service
- ✕ No way to win on authority — only on relevance and clarity
Commercial pages first. Answers second.
Most local SEO for general contractors starts with a blog. We started with the pages that money terms actually land on, then made every one of them legible to an AI system that has to summarize the page in two sentences.
Visible on every surface that matters.
Live Rankability Tracker data across the three tracked topics. Google, AI Overview, and ChatGPT measured independently.
| Tracked topic | AI Overview | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full kitchen remodel | Position 2 | Position 1 — mentioned & cited | Brand mentioned |
| Kitchen remodel cost | Not found | Position 1 — mentioned & cited | Position 5 — mentioned & cited |
| Kitchen remodeling | Position 1 | Not found | Not found |

A site with three backlinks outranked Home Depot, Yelp and Thumbtack — and got cited by AI while doing it.
Authority is the usual currency in search. This campaign had none of it. What it had instead was precise commercial intent, real Costa Mesa detail, and content structured so an AI system could summarize it without guessing. That turned out to be enough.
Homeowners don’t use one search box anymore.
The same homeowner planning a kitchen might Google “kitchen remodel Costa Mesa,” skim an AI Overview about what a remodel includes, then ask ChatGPT what it should cost. Three surfaces, three different sets of rules, one buying decision.
Ranking well on one and being invisible on the others means missing the homeowner at the exact moment they’re forming an opinion about who to call. This campaign shows those surfaces can be won together — and that a small site can compete on all three before it has the backlink profile to compete on any of them.
Building pages an AI system can quote rather than merely crawl is the whole discipline of answer engine optimization for contractors, and it is the reason a three-backlink site can turn up beside national brands inside an AI answer.
We ran the same sequence for a Los Angeles general contractor working from the opposite problem: strong reviews and steady referrals, but a single noindex tag hiding the entire website from Google.
Visibility is not yet demand.
Honest reporting means showing the gap as well as the win. The campaign has attention. Turning that attention into booked calls is the next phase of work — and the tracker shows exactly where it’s leaking.

- Impressions are being served, but clicks are still at zero on the tracked topic
- That points at click-through rate, not at rankings
- Titles and descriptions were written for relevance, not yet for the click
- AI citations sit at 35/100 — the weakest of the three channels
- Rewrite titles and descriptions around contractor matching, local relevance, and free estimates
- Expand the full-remodel page with consistent local cost, timeline, contractor-selection and FAQ content
- Add reliable form-submission and click-to-call tracking
- Build relevant local citations and referring domains to lift a Domain Score of 1
- Keep measuring Google and AI visibility separately — they do not move together
